The yucca is notable for its rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves. It is native to the hot and dry (arid) parts of North America, Central America, and the West Indies.

The yucca is widely grown as an ornamental plant in gardens. The “yucca flower” is the state flower of New Mexico. No species name is given in the citation.

Yuccas vary in their growth habit, with some featuring a single short trunk, some with branching trunks, and some that branch out at ground level. They have large rosettes of narrow, stiff, sword-shaped leaves. The flower spikes develop quickly and can tower over the foliage.

Yuccas need a bright sunny position if they are to flower well. They generally prefer a light well-drained soil, but can tolerate poor soils. Routine maintenance includes a monthly feed, and careful watering.
